the Steppers

African Drum

Picture
This drum was used for many occasions such as weddings, funerals and festivals. It was made out of wood , hide ,paint and metal.
This drum was made from 1900-1977. The lion that acts as a stand represents power. This instrument comes from Ghana and from the Asante tribe. I think this instrument is interesting because it has many symbols on it that most people wouldn't understand.

MY Pan Flute

Picture
This is a pan flute (wood wind) . It is played by blowing over the top of the instrument.
I made it out of PVC pipes and hot glue. The first step was to cut the PVC pipes and hot glue them
the challenges that i faced were that i couldn't make it loud enough to be heard i overcame it by having my own solo.

My Finished Pan Flute

Picture
I created cultural meaning in the decorative elements i chose by making them pictures of things from my culture the areas I incorporated were common language , innovations and traditions, I did it by getting pictures that were from those categories.

My individual part in my groups performance is doing my part with Chris which is part of the song that i wrote and another part is being one of the people that plays soft notes and playing in the back round.Another thing i do is to do my mini group part with Chris and to talk in group discussions. Since i was one of the three people that was first in the group some of my ideas are already in our performance.

My Report

My cultural vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my PVC pan flute. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments, and the traditions important to my creation.

Can you imagine five regular PVC pipes being converted into a functional musical instrument that can not only hit a mystifying high note and a magical low note but is also an amazing cultural artifact? The pan flute is a musical instrument because It can effectively play notes and it will not just sound like noise.

Along with being a musical instrument it’s also a cultural artifact because it’s man made and represents my culture. Furthermore it represents my culture’s identity because I have a picture of “bling” on my instrument. It comes from traditions because whenever there is a performance people in hip hop wear “bling”.

Another thing I have on my instrument is a picture of a “boom box”. This element comes from my culture’s innovations because it was made for people in hip hop to dance to.

Take a close look at the picture of the word “sup” in bubble letters on my instrument. This comes from the common language part of my culture because people in hip hop say it frequently. Also, I put the words “beat boxing” on my instrument, which is taken from innovations because it was created out of the hip hop era.

Close your eyes and imagine ,my completed instrument a PVC pan flute that was influenced by a drum artifact used for weddings, and the photograph of my African instrument are similar. They are both a part of a musical performance. Plus they are similar because they each have cultural elements to them. They are both different because they are used for different types of ceremonies such as weddings and funerals. They are both different by what they represent by both representing different cultural elements.

My instrument can be used as part of my cultural experience. My group’s cultural tradition would be performed on a stage at a dance competition. It would be done at the beginning of the dance competition and at the end. The meaning of this tradition is to represent the dancing part of my culture, hip hop. We will be wearing our uniforms which are a black top (if were performing outside it would be a white top) with black pants and a cool looking hat.

Now you know how five PVC pipes can be turned into an amazing cultural artifact, be compared to an ancient instrument and be an important part in a cultural tradition.
