on display in the smithsoniean institute
This instrument is a wood wind whistle. This instrument comes from Congo. It was made from the late 19th century to the 20th century. The dog is a symbols which has two eyes one for this world and one for another world. The instrument was used for hunting. I believe this instrument is very creative because the picture is actually upside down!I also Loved the pieces the instrument was built with which was wood, and antelope horn

My Harp

Picture
My harp is a string instrument. It is played by plucking the strings. This instrument is made of wood, rubber bands, a dowel, and purple duct tape to hold it together. The proses to build this instrument was cutting the wood, hot gluing the wood together, screwing in the screws, and placing the rubber bands around the long screws. We  faced the challenge of strings slipping and overcame this by tightening the strings by rapping them around the screws. We also couldn't hear my instrument and we fixed this by adding jingle bells to project the sound.

My Completed Harp

Mallory's Final instrument
My completed harp has cultural meaning for three reasons. First, I spray painted my instrument with different colors. Another thing is that the pictures  I put on my instrument reflect  the selected culture "hip hop". I incorporated innovations, common cultural value, and,  traditions into my instrument. I incorporated innovations by adding rap onto my instrument. I also added graffiti as a background  to my instrument and took pictures off of Google that were of graffiti. I incorporated common cultural value to my instrument by adding dance crews, a boom box, and a microphone. I also added beads because most girls add beads into their hair. Finally I added Traditions like  the vibrant colors to show the costumes

                                   My Final Cultural Vibrations Report

My cultural vibrations report will have information I learned about my instruments, the harp and the Hunter’s whistle. This report will give information about the design, comparison between the two, and traditions, important to my creation.
Close your eyes and imagine four pieces of wood and rubber bands fastened around screws that can be both a musical instrument and a cultural artifact. My instrument is a functioning musical instrument because you will hear a snap or a jingle bell ring. In addition to this, vibrations will project the sound when you pluck a string. The harp I designed can keep rhythm. Along with sound, it is also a cultural artifact because it has pictures and symbols that have a cultural meaning to the theme which is “hip hop”.

Take a close look at the way I sprayed my instrument with spray paint to look like graffiti; this is a common tradition and innovation hip hop artists’ use. In addition to this, our group “The Steppers” TM used common language a hip hop artist would use. For example, our group will say yo or steppers stepping out often in our performance. The third and final example of our tradition is the setting were we would perform our rhythms, which is at a competition in L.A.

Would you believe that an African instrument influenced my instrument? Yet they have many similarities and differences.

The Hunter’s whistle and the instrument I designed are similar because they are both a functioning musical instruments and cultural artifacts. This is because the Hunter’s whistle is blown over the top and my instrument can be plucked my instrument can be plucked by the strings and it will make a sound. Also, the instruments have decorations that tell about the culture the instrument represents. The two instruments are different because the African instrument is a woodwind you blow over a hole to make sound. The instrument I designed is a string instrument you pluck the strings to make sound. Not only this, but the African instrument also used for hunting, and the instrument I designed is used for hip hop dance competitions.

My harp can be used as part of my cultural experience because, we use our rhythm when we were participating in a dance competion and when the crowd needs entertaining. The significant meaning of our tradition is to earn respect, be the best of the best, and to possibly win money. We have no specific foods or a feast at the dance competition, but we do have specific clothing. Our costume is black with some white and everyone has a different style hat.

In summery, this report tells us about the cultural vibrations report the sixth grade did this year. With a lot of hard work and time I was able to make a recycled harp to challenge myself.
