My Drum

Picture
This is my bucket drum. It is played by banging it with a drum stick. I made it buy taking a bucket and attaching Hip Hop symbols onto the drum. Next i took two drum sticks to hit against the drum. One challenge i faced while making my drum was the pictures falling off the drum. I solved this by using more tape.

My Guitar

This is my guitar. But it didn't work out well so i made a drum.

My African Instrument

Picture
This is the African artifact I was assigned to. It's an African whistle pendant. It's from The Democratic Republic of Congo. It was also  made in the Early-mid 20th Century.  The African instrument was used to resemble Pende masks made by Pende peoples to ward off evil. It was also part of a collection of Pende face pendents. The cultural symbol on my African whistle pendant is the horns at the top to represent the Pende masks. I am stillcurious to learn what kind of music is played with it and when the music is played.

                             Cultural Vibrations ; Final Reflection.

My cultural vibrations report will provide information I have discovered about my musical instrument. The report will give interesting information about the design, the comparisons to older instruments and the traditions important to my creation. So let’s get started.

It’s hard to imagine but my instrument is both a functioning musical instrument as well as a cultural artifact. First of all it is a musical instrument because you bang it with a drum stick and it makes a musical note. It can be played on the side or the top to make a different note. Furthermore it is a cultural artifact because my drum has pictures like hip hop Harry and a boom box on it. Along with that there is also a guy with headphones and graffiti. And last of all a picture of a guy with a  guy with a microphone for a head, and, Bling. All of these things represent the hip hop culture because hip hop dancers made headphones, and a boom box more popular and they invented graffiti art. They also use microphones to sing hip hop music and hip hop Harry does hip hop.

Amazingly my modern day bucket drum and the African whistle pendant are alike because they both are used to play a song. And both represent a culture. They are different because they are played differently. My instrument is played by banging it with a drum stick, and to play the African instrument you  blow into it. They are different because one represents a different cultures things because mine represents a lot of different hip hop symbols and common cultures in hip hop. The African instrument is used to ward off evil. The African instrument resembles masks made by Pende Peoples. And my instrument resembles bucket drums used usually in New York City and it is very likely for a hip hop dancer to be dancing to the music.

My bucket drum can be used as part of my cultural experience because we would perform our tradition/dance at a dance competition to show off our skills. An extraordinary fact about our tradition is that the meaning of our tradition is to win money, earn respect, and be the best of the best. We also wear all black and white clothes with hats of any color because a lot of hip hop artists wear clothes like that. Isn’t that remarkable?
